Digital media has become such a normal part of everyday life that I do not always realize how often I use it. Between working full time, going to school, and managing everything else that comes with everyday life, I do not spend a huge amount of time on social media. However, I still use several digital media applications throughout a typical day, mostly for entertainment and to stay connected with others.
The Digital Media I Use
The applications I use most often are Facebook, TikTok, Snapchat, Pinterest, and Pandora. I use Facebook mostly to see what friends and family are doing, look at local information, and occasionally interact with posts. TikTok is probably the application I use most for entertainment. I can open the app for a few minutes and end up watching a wide variety of videos based on my interests. Snapchat is another way I stay connected with people, although I do not use it constantly. I also use Pinterest from time to time when I am looking for ideas or inspiration. It is different from the other platforms because I am usually searching for something specific rather than simply scrolling through content. Pandora is another part of my digital routine because I often use it to listen to music while doing other things. These applications all serve different purposes, but they are examples of how digital media can fit into different parts of my day.
My Reactions to Digital Media
Because I am not someone who spends a significant amount of time on social media, most of my experiences with these applications are positive. I primarily use them for entertainment, so they give me an opportunity to relax and take my mind off work and school for a little while. I also enjoy being able to quickly find content that interests me without having to spend a lot of time searching for it. The biggest negative experience I have with social media is political drama. It seems like political arguments can quickly take over social media feeds, and I do not find that entertaining or enjoyable. I usually try to avoid getting involved because I use social media as a way to relax rather than argue with strangers on the internet.
Digital Media and Marketing Today
One thing I notice about digital media marketing is how personalized it has become. The content people see is often based on what they have previously searched for, watched, liked, or interacted with. For example, after watching certain types of videos on TikTok, I will start seeing more content related to those interests. The same concept can apply to advertisements. Companies can use digital platforms to reach specific audiences instead of trying to market the same message to everyone. I also think digital marketing is effective because it can become part of the entertainment people are already consuming. Instead of simply seeing an advertisement in a traditional commercial, consumers may see a product demonstrated in a TikTok video, recommended by a creator, or appear in their Facebook feed. This makes marketing feel more integrated into everyday digital experiences. Digital media is a small but consistent part of my daily life. I may not be someone who posts frequently or spends hours on social media, but I still interact with digital media in several ways. As digital marketing continues to become more personalized and integrated into the content people enjoy, I think it will become even more important for businesses to understand how consumers use these platforms.
